Acupuncture & Dry Needling Group Post-Conference Workshop

Title: Dry Needling and the Matrix of Neuro-musculoskeletal Pain

To Register click here

Presenter:  Dr Jay Shah

Date:          Tuesday 6 Oct 2009

Time:          9.00am – 5.00pm

Cost:           ADNG/Rural Member $240
                   APA Member $340
                   Non APA Member $680

Venue:        APA NSW Branch
                   Unit 5, 77 Parramatta Rd
                   Silverwater

Outline: This workshop will integrate emerging knowledge from the pain sciences in a clinically accessible way. Attendees will learn important palpation skills and how to identify objective physical findings suggestive of spinal segmental sensitisation (SSS) in their patients with chronic pain.  Participants will also practice specific needling techniques and physical medicine modalities to desensitise the involved spinal segment, as well as how to objectively determine whether the physical manifestations of SSS were resolved following their treatment selection.

Attendees will learn objective and quantitative examination techniques that help identify the tissues and likely pain mechanisms involved in the patient with chronic pain.  These easy-to-learn examination skills are fundamental to the evaluation and management of chronic myofacsial pain.  Furthermore, their application before and after treatments aimed at desensitising the involved spinal segment provides the clinician and patient meaningful, objective and reproducible physical findings to guide treatment outcomes.

Palpation techniques and the use of pain diagnostic instruments as well as
novel applications of ultrasound technology to visualize and characterise myofascial trigger points and surrounding soft tissue will be addressed.
Dry Needling and other physical medicine approaches for desensitising sensitised states and neuromodulating the pain matrix are considered. This workshop includes needling techniques and physical medicine modalities with demonstrations and audience participation of examination and treatment techniques.
