Understanding Water

Sydney, 3-4 October 2009

The Aquatic Group warmly welcomes members and all attendees to join us in our vibrant and thought-provoking program at Conference Week 2009: Understanding Water. Our keynote speaker is Dr Tapani Poyhonen from Finland.

Eminent physiotherapist, academic and exercise physiologist, Dr Poyhonen will be sharing, amongst other topics, his research into the physiology of immersion, quadriceps activation and resistance training for knee conditions in the pool. Specifically, Dr Poyhonen has completed research in neuromuscular function, electromyographic and kinematic analysis of therapeutic knee exercises under water, effects of progressive aquatic resistance training on lower extremity impairments after unilateral knee replacement and cardiac autonomic function during head-out water immersion. Dr Poyhonen has previously presented at the World Congress of Physical Therapy (WCPT) and the Annual Congress European College of Sport Science.

In addition to Dr Poyhonen, we are fortunate to have a number of local presenters sharing their research and experiences on a variety of Aquatic-related topics. These include sessions on lumbopelvic and hip rehabilitation, physiological effects of immersion including reduced weight-bearing, motor control, and aquatic service management and delivery. Sports injuries, Parkinson’s Disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pelvic pain in pregnancy, post-joint replacement, persistent pain and chronic disease management  – these diverse conditions, and more, will be up for discussion. The benefits that aquatic physiotherapy can provide will be sure to inspire. Be sure to look through our program for more details.

See you as we make a splash in Sydney!

Seven Years in Seven Minutes: Short summaries of important recent research

Chair: A/Professor Rob Herbert

Room: Bayside Auditorium A&B

Experts in each of the larger fields of physiotherapy practice will provide accessible overviews of the main findings of the last 7 years of high quality clinical research from their area in 7-minute presentations. Each group will identify key clinical research, summarise the findings of the research, and discuss the implications of the research for clinical practice. The purpose is to give clinicians from other areas an overview of the main research-led advances across a range of other fields of practice.

Louise Ada (Scientific Editor, AJP, Chair of the International Society of Physiotherapy Journal Editors, and a member of several other journal Editorial Boards) and members of the AJP Editorial Boards will unravel some of the mysteries and discuss strategies to increase your chances of being accepted by the journal at the top of your list.
